Will new aluminium windows solve your problems?

You might assume with the advances in technology and materials that window products would be superior or at least as good as old quality windows. But this may not be the case.

In reality “modern” does not necessarily mean that something is quality built, uses quality materials or that it meets expectations.

Cheap off-shore manufacturing means we have access to materials and products but can the quality be guaranteed? Buyer beware!

Recently we were contacted by a desperate young couple who requested – “can you upgrade the seals for our windows and doors”.

Ordinarily, this is an ideal enquiry for Sealasash. However, it was revealed that their windows and doors were aluminium, double-glazed, with draught seals and… they were only 18 months old!

When people buy aluminium double-glazed windows, they think they are buying maintenance-free comfort.

But after only a year-and-a-half, photos of the windows showed:

  • Windows falling apart at the corners.
  • Windows that would not close.
  • Very cheap draught seals that were letting in draughts, dust and dirt, even when closed.

Unfortunately, we were unable to undertake work on these windows but we did offer advice to the owners that they needed to follow up on warranty.

The moral of the story is that not everything modern is better than old and the materials and workmanship determine quality outcomes. Old wooden windows are quality by the mere fact that the wood is old growth, dense fibre, rot resistant, and the workmanship applied was top notch and has stood the test of time.

There are plenty of cheap new double glazed windows out there so maybe think twice before removing your old wooden windows to replace them with modern ones, because you could be very disappointed.

Sealasash can upgrade your original wooden windows so that they will function to modern expectations and improve your comfort.
