In West Hobart on Melville St, we upgraded a combination of fixed timber sashes and Yorkshire sliding windows with 6.1mm Glavenir Vacuum Insulated Glazing, pairing the glass upgrade with careful overhaul and sealing works to improve comfort, reduce draughts and keep the windows functioning properly.
The project focused on lifting thermal performance and usability while retaining the original character of the timber joinery, with particular attention given to the working Yorkshire sliders so they operated more smoothly and sealed more effectively.
Scope of works
The project involved installing 18 panes of 6.1mm Glavenir Vacuum Insulated Double Glazing across the property. This included 10 fully fixed sashes and 4 working Yorkshire sliding windows. Specific tasks included adding nosing around the base of Yorkshire windows for effective draught sealing and beading, and installing 58 internal glazing bars.
Detailed work on the Yorkshire sliders included a draught seal and a complete overhaul, with new brass track and rollers fitted. These windows were also reglazed with 6.1mm Glavenir, accompanied by replica glazing bars. The fixed sashes were reglazed with 6.1mm Glavenir Vacuum Glazing, which included the removal and replacement of the sash, application of gap sealant, and installation of replica glazing bars. The Yorkshire windows were straightened, and new pine glazing bars, top sash packers, external Tas oak fillets, and post pine fillets were installed, with routering out of rebates on arched timber.
Outcome
The project successfully transformed the property’s windows, providing enhanced insulation, improved functionality for the sliding units, and a refreshed aesthetic with the new glazing and replica glazing bars. The diligent work ensures the windows are now operating correctly and are clean.
