
Somewhere out there, right now, a person is standing four inches from a pane of vacuum glass, one eye closed, hunting for the dots. They have read a forum thread. They are Concerned. They have questions, and those questions have exclamation marks.
We would like to gently talk this person down.
Vacuum insulated glazing does have tiny support pillars, and yes, in the right light, from the right angle, if you go looking for them, you can find them. But here is the thing nobody with black-dot anxiety wants to hear: you are never going to notice them again after week one, and there is a mountain of vision science explaining exactly why. So let’s have a bit of fun pulling this apart, and then explain why Panasonic went black on purpose, because it turns out the “flaw” is actually the clever bit.
First, a confession: you don’t actually look at your windows
Be honest. When was the last time you looked at a window rather than through one?
You look at the garden. The street. The weather you’re about to walk into. The neighbour doing something questionable with a wheelie bin. The glass itself is just the invisible referee standing between you and the view, and your visual system treats it accordingly.
This isn’t a personality flaw, it’s how eyes work. When you gaze at a distant scene, the lens in your eye focuses on that, not on the pane 30cm away. Anything on the glass, a speck of dust, a fingerprint, a microscopic ceramic pillar, sits well outside your plane of focus and goes soft and blurry. Photographers call it depth of field. You call it “not noticing the smudge until the sun hits it at 4pm.”
Your eyes also point outward together, aimed at the view, which means the near surface of the glass is quietly ignored by the whole system. Vision researchers have a lovely finding here: people are so good at looking through glass that they occasionally walk into it. Clean glass doors are a genuine workplace hazard precisely because the brain refuses to believe they’re there.
So the idea that a scattering of sub-millimetre dots is going to ruin your day is, scientifically speaking, a big ask of an organ that can’t reliably spot an entire glass door.
The dots are smaller than your commitment to finding them
Let’s talk scale, because the panic tends to imagine something like polka dots on a shower curtain.
The support pillars in Glavenir are microscopic ceramic spacers, roughly a third of a millimetre across, spaced a couple of centimetres apart, holding two panes of glass apart across a vacuum gap one tenth of a millimetre wide. They have to be there, because the atmosphere is pressing on that glass with about ten tonnes per square metre of force, and without the pillars the two panes would slap together like a closing book.
That’s not a defect. That’s the entire technology working. The dots are the reason the glass insulates like something three times its thickness. Complaining about them is a bit like complaining that your suspension bridge has cables.

And they are tiny. As the folks at Vacuum Insulated Glass Australia put it, you’ll only really notice them “if you press your face to the glass,” which, and we say this with love, is not a normal way to use a window.
“But why black? Wouldn’t clear ones be invisible?”
Ah. This is the clever bit, and it’s the exact opposite of what your intuition screams.
You’d assume transparent, see-through pillars would vanish and black ones would stand out like ink spots. Nope. It’s backwards, and there’s real physics behind it.
Transparent pillars don’t disappear, they glow. Light enters them, bends, scatters, and diffuses, creating faint little halos around each one. Because your eye is far more sensitive to something getting brighter than to something getting darker, those little sparkles catch your attention and refuse to let go. A translucent dot is a tiny disco. Your peripheral vision loves a tiny disco.
A black ceramic pillar does the opposite. It absorbs stray light instead of scattering it, so instead of a glowing halo you get a whisper of shadow, and your brain has spent your entire life filing away small shadows as “normal texture, nothing to see here.” Against brick, timber, foliage or a grey Tasmanian sky, a black dot reads as just another fleck in a busy world and disappears completely.
Panasonic didn’t stumble into black. They chose it because the human eye told them to.

The bit where black also wins on performance (this is not a consolation prize)
Here’s the kicker: black ceramic isn’t just the sneakiest choice visually, it’s the best-performing one too. You don’t often get “looks better” and “works better” in the same decision, but this is one of those rare wins.
Those pillars are the one place heat can sneak across an otherwise near-perfect vacuum, so what they’re made of matters enormously. Ceramic conducts heat far more reluctantly than metal, which keeps the thermal bridging down and the insulation up. It’s why Glavenir hits U-values as low as 0.58 to 0.70 W/m²K in a pane just 6 to 8mm thick, comfortably better than triple glazing several times its thickness and weight.
Transparent pillars, by contrast, often need to be chunkier or more numerous to hold the same strength, which can quietly add more heat paths back in. So the translucent “no dots” dream can end up giving you a worse-insulating window that, thanks to the halos, you notice more. Two steps back for the price of an imaginary step forward.
Black ceramic: less visible, better insulating, and it just keeps going. No rubber seals to fail, no gas to leak out, and a lifespan that academic research puts at 50 years or more.
What people actually notice (spoiler: not the dots)
We install a lot of this glass, and we read our reviews. Do you know how many customers mention the dots as a problem?
Roughly none.
What they mention is that the house is warmer. That the traffic outside went quiet. That the condensation that used to weep down the panes every winter morning simply stopped. That the view “hasn’t been impacted at all.” People notice the effects of the glass, warmth, silence, dry windows, because those are the things you actually experience in a home. The pillars are back in the same “invisible referee” category as the glass itself.
The black-dot panic, in other words, is a pre-purchase worry that reliably evaporates about a week after installation, right around the time you stop thinking about your windows and start enjoying your living room.
The clear answer (pun absolutely intended)
If you’ve been down the internet rabbit hole searching for “vacuum glass with no dots” or “translucent vacuum glass,” here’s the honest summary:
- All vacuum glass needs micro-pillars. They’re structural, not optional, and not a flaw.
- Translucent pillars don’t hide, they scatter light and glow, which makes them more noticeable.
- Black ceramic pillars absorb light, melt into shadow, and insulate better while they’re at it.
- And regardless of which you get, your own eyes are going to look straight through them at the garden anyway.
So relax. Step back from the glass. Open both eyes. Look at the view, not the window, the way you were always going to.
