Staged vacuum glass upgrade to timber windows in Mount Nelson
This Mount Nelson home is a great example of how existing timber windows can be upgraded carefully over time, without losing the character that made the home special in the first place.
The client wanted to reduce cold glass and condensation, but they also wanted to preserve their beautiful timber windows. Rather than replacing the windows, Sealasash completed the work as a staged vacuum glass upgrade across several areas of the home.
Across the different stages, both 8.1mm toughened vacuum glass by Panasonic and 6.1mm vacuum glass thermal by Panasonic were used, depending on the window type, location and requirements of each part of the home.

Why this home suited a staged upgrade
Not every timber window project needs to be completed in one go.
For this Mount Nelson home, a staged approach made sense. It allowed the client to improve the comfort of the home over several months, starting with key living and utility areas before moving through to the lounge, den and bedrooms.
This is often a practical way to approach a larger window upgrade. The home can be improved progressively while the existing timber windows and doors remain in place.
For many older homes, replacement is not always the best answer. If the timber windows are worth saving, a careful upgrade can improve comfort while keeping the proportions, timber detail and character of the original joinery.
Stage one: kitchen, dining, entrance and bathroom
The first stage focused on important everyday areas of the home, including the kitchen, dining area, entrance and bathroom.
These are spaces where glass performance can make a noticeable difference. Dining areas and entrances often contain larger or more exposed glass, while bathrooms are commonly affected by condensation due to higher humidity.
For this stage, Sealasash used 8.1mm toughened vacuum glass by Panasonic. This allowed the home to receive a meaningful glazing upgrade while still working with the existing timber window and door system.
Stage two: lounge and den
The next stage focused on the lounge and den.
These are the rooms where comfort is especially important. If a lounge room has cold glass or condensation in winter, it can quickly become one of the least comfortable parts of the home.
For this stage, Sealasash again used 8.1mm toughened vacuum glass by Panasonic. The aim was to improve the way the rooms felt while retaining the original timber windows.
Rather than changing the character of the home, the work allowed the existing joinery to remain while improving the performance of the glass.
Stage three: bedroom glazing
The later stage focused on the bedrooms.
Bedrooms are often where cold glass and condensation are noticed most. During colder weather, warm indoor air can meet a cold pane of glass and create moisture on the inside surface. Improving the glass helps reduce the cold surface effect, which can reduce the conditions that cause condensation to form.
For this part of the project, Sealasash used 6.1mm vacuum glass thermal by Panasonic. This was selected to suit the bedroom window requirements while continuing the same overall goal: improve comfort without removing the original timber windows.
Keeping the timber windows
The most important part of this project was that the existing timber windows were retained.
The client did not want to lose the beauty of the home’s timber joinery. They wanted better performance, less cold glass and reduced condensation risk, but without replacing the windows with something that changed the feel of the house.
This is where vacuum glass can be such a strong option for existing timber windows. Because vacuum glass can be much slimmer than many traditional double-glazed units, it can often suit timber windows where thicker glazing would be more difficult to accommodate.

Why glass performance matters
Cold glass changes the way a room feels.
Even when the air temperature is comfortable, a cold glass surface can make the area around the window feel cooler. It can also contribute to condensation when warm indoor air meets the cold pane.

Why the full system still matters
